If you're getting your first tattoo, this is the playbook.

1. Wait Most regrets come from rushing. Sit with the idea for at least 3 months. If you still want it, you probably actually want it.

2. Pick the style first, then the artist Different artists do different things well. Don't pick a fine line artist for traditional work. Look at full portfolios — 30+ pieces — and check their healed work, not just fresh.

3. Pick a sensible first placement Outer forearm, upper outer arm, or calf. Easy pain, easy healing, easy to hide for work.

4. Plan the cost Most first tattoos cost $200–$500. Don't go to the cheapest option. Use the [cost calculator](/tattoo-cost-calculator).

5. Book the consultation A real artist will want to talk through the design — not slap it on. Bring 5–15 reference images and an open mind.

6. Prep for the day - Sleep 8 hours - Eat a real meal 1–2 hours before - No alcohol or aspirin/ibuprofen - Wear loose clothing - Bring water, snacks, phone charger

7. Heal it properly Follow the [aftercare guide](/aftercare). The first three days are the most important. Don't pick. Don't soak. SPF50+ once healed, forever.
