How to Choose a Tattoo Artist (Without Regretting It)

Portfolio red flags, questions to ask, and how to spot artists worth waiting for.

Choosing the wrong artist is the single most common tattoo regret. Bad linework, wonky composition, healed-out colour — all of it traces back to this decision.

Here's how working artists themselves choose who they trust.

1. Look at HEALED work, not fresh Fresh tattoos look incredible. The real test is what the tattoo looks like 12 months in. Most artists post both — find the healed photos before you book.

2. Make sure their portfolio matches your style A great traditional artist won't necessarily do great fine line. Style isn't universal. If you want fine line, find someone whose entire feed is fine line.

3. Check for consistency Look at 30+ pieces. Are the lines consistent? Are the proportions right? Is colour even? Inconsistent work is a red flag.

4. Ask about hygiene Single-use needles only. Sealed pigments. Disposable barrier wraps on equipment. They should be happy to walk you through their setup.

5. Trust the consultation A good consultation should not feel rushed. They should listen, ask questions, push back if your idea won't age well, and only book once you're aligned.

6. Wait for the right artist The cheapest, most-available option is rarely the right one. Top artists book 3–12 months out. Wait.
