The New Tattoo Checklist

Use this print-and-tick checklist for your next tattoo. The 24 hours before, during, and after.

  • Sleep 8 hours+
  • No alcohol the night before
  • No aspirin or ibuprofen — they thin the blood
  • Drink more water than usual
  • Eat a real meal 1–2 hours before
  • Wear loose clothing that exposes the area
  • Bring snacks, water and a phone charger
  • Confirm appointment + payment method with the studio
  • Arrive 10 minutes early
  • Eat something if blood sugar is low
  • Look at the stencil from every angle before they start
  • Speak up about size/placement now, not later
  • Tip 15–20% if you're happy with the work
  • Leave the wrap on as long as your artist said
  • First wash: lukewarm water, fragrance-free soap, pat dry
  • Apply a thin layer of recommended balm
  • No alcohol for at least 24 hours
  • Sleep on clean sheets, fresh pillowcase
  • Don't re-bandage
