Healing a tattoo well is mostly about doing very little — and doing it consistently. Most issues come from over-doing things: re-bandaging, slathering ointment too thick, scrubbing too hard.
Here's the playbook every Australian tattoo artist will tell you, in order.
Day 1: Wrap on, then wrap off
Your artist will wrap the fresh tattoo in cling film or a protective film like Saniderm/Recovery Derm. Leave it on as long as they say — anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours. When it comes off, gently wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Don't re-bandage.
Days 2–3: Wash, dry, balm
Two to three times a day: wash gently, pat dry, apply a thin layer of an artist-recommended balm. The plasma seeping out is normal. The tattoo will feel hot and tight.
Days 4–7: Itch sets in
Tightness peaks. The skin starts to flake — like a sunburn. DO NOT scratch. Tap gently if you have to. Keep moisturising.
Days 8–14: Peeling stage
Top skin layer comes off. The tattoo may look "milky" or dull — this is normal. Don't over-moisturise.
Days 15–30: Settled
Surface healing is done. Deeper layers continue settling for another two weeks. From now on: SPF50+ every time you go outside. Forever.
What to avoid
- Pools, ocean, baths, hot tubs for 2–3 weeks
- Direct sun on the tattoo while healing
- Tight clothing that rubs the area
- Vaseline, coconut oil, random body lotions
- Picking, scratching, peeling
