Dr Pickles Ingredients Explained — What's Actually In It

Pawpaw, D-Panthenol, Safflower Seed Oil. What each one does and why the formula works.

Dr Pickles is one of the few tattoo aftercare brands that publishes a complete ingredient list. Here's what each ingredient does, why it's in the formula, and what to look out for if you have allergies.

The active ingredients

### Pawpaw (Carica Papaya) The hero of the formula. Pawpaw contains papain, an enzyme with mild antiseptic properties. It soothes irritated skin and helps remove dead skin cells without scrubbing. It's the same active that makes traditional pawpaw ointment effective on cuts and abrasions.

### D-Panthenol (Vitamin B5, 5%) A pro-vitamin that converts to pantothenic acid (B5) in the skin. It increases skin hydration, supports the regeneration of damaged skin barrier, and reduces transepidermal water loss. D-Panthenol is the same active ingredient that makes Bepanthen effective on healing skin.

### Safflower Seed Oil Rich in linoleic acid. Supports the skin's natural lipid barrier, prevents moisture loss, and creates an environment for scab-free healing.

The supporting ingredients

### Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus Dulcis) Light, fast-absorbing carrier oil. Vitamin E content is mildly anti-inflammatory. **Note:** if you have nut allergies, contact Dr Pickles directly — they have a vegan formulation that uses different oils.

### Candelilla Wax (vegan formula) Plant-derived wax used instead of beeswax in the vegan formulation. Makes the formula suitable for vegans and people with bee allergies.

### Glycerin A humectant — pulls moisture from the air into the skin.

### Allantoin Soothing agent that promotes cell regeneration and reduces irritation. Also found in many medical-grade wound-care creams.

### Phenoxyethanol Preservative that prevents bacterial growth in the tube. Used at low concentrations (under 1%).

What's NOT in it - ✗ Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) — too occlusive for healing tattoos - ✗ Lanolin — Dr Pickles is vegan - ✗ Parabens — clean formulation - ✗ Synthetic fragrance — fragrance-free - ✗ Mineral oil — uses plant oils only

Allergy considerations - **Papaya / latex allergy:** Approximately 1 in 5,000 people are allergic to papaya. Always patch test before using on a fresh tattoo. - **Nut allergies:** The standard formula contains sweet almond oil. Check with Dr Pickles for the nut-free vegan formulation. - **Bee allergy:** The vegan formula uses Candelilla Wax instead of beeswax — confirm you have the vegan version. - **Skin sensitivity to D-Panthenol:** Rare, but possible. If your skin reacts to Bepanthen, it may also react to Dr Pickles.

Why this combination works Most generic aftercare creams have either a healing active (Bepanthen has D-Panthenol) OR a barrier ingredient (Vaseline blocks moisture loss). Dr Pickles has both, plus an antiseptic. That's why a single product can carry a tattoo through all 30 days of healing rather than needing to switch products mid-heal.
